Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard procedure for obtaining a marriage license in Massachusetts?

To be legally wed, a couple  must obtain a marriage license from a city or town clerk. To obtain a license, they must first file with the clerk a paper called "Intentions"   On the fourth day thereafter,  the license can issue, and  the wedding can occur right away (and must occur within 60 days). The requirement for a blood test has been eliminated.

Can that be speeded up?

Yes,  The Judge of the Probate Court has authority to waive the three-day waiting period. Anecdotal evidence is that the process is not difficult.  If the city/town clerk is not familiar with the process, call the court clerk's office and inquire.  (The Hampshire Probate and Family Court--413-586-8500 --serves the Northampton area.)

Is residency an issue?

No.

Where can we get married?

Anywhere you wish. There's a nice hilltop near my home in Northampton that has provided an excellent venue for small informal gatherings. If you want to keep it really fast and simple, we can use my Conz Street office.

Can we get a copy of the marriage certificate right away?

No. I will sign your license and return it to the city/town clerk, from whom a marriage certificate may be obtained in a few days.
